The vow renewal is a ritual to reaffirm the love between a couple and the commitment that unites them. Family and friends form a sacred circle so that the couple can be presented to the universal cosmic energy, mother earth, the four cardinal points, the site guardians, and finally, to the center of their hearts.
The couple is cleansed and blessed with copal incense and rue (a plant used to deflect negativity). The couple may exchange rings, if they wish, as well as vows from the heart. The renewal of vows is celebrated with a toast with a Yucatecan beverage, and culminates in an offering to the sea of corn, beans, honey, peppers, and flowers as a symbol of abundance.
